Pornography and Relationships

Pornography addiction has a strong affect on many relationships in our lives. Although a marital relationship sees the most devastating effects of pornography addiction, there are many other relationships that are affected as well.

Relationship with self:
The first relationship that is affected by pornography addiction is an addict’s relationship with themselves. Many addicts live in constant fear of how the addiction is affecting their lives, how people would react if they knew about their addiction, and why they can’t seem to break free from the seemingly endless addiction cycle. For most they lose confidence, self-esteem, and self-respect. An addict feels “freakish” and unable to have and maintain normal relationships.

Relationships with others:
Because of the guilt and shame associated with pornography addiction, a person will soon start to isolate themselves from family and friends. A common manifestation of the resulting depression is irritability, anger and aggression, and disrespect and resentment towards others. Often, even though an addict might be physically in a room full of people they are absent mentally and emotionally.

Relationships with spouses:
The most devastating effects of pornography addictions are on marital relationships. Too often, an addict has unintentionally created a picture of what a physical relationship with a spouse should be based on their pornography use. Guilt and shame hold them back from being able to form real and strong relationships based on values, maturity, ability to communicate, and friendship. Instead, they base their relationship on very shallow expectations that don’t build the true foundations for a lasting relationship. In the end, they risk losing the trust and confidence of their spouse and unfortunately, divorce can be common.
